Olive Garden closing as new construction projects move in
Olive Garden is closing as the new construction on its new indoor garden continues.
The indoor garden was part of the original plan for the iconic restaurant, which opened in 1966 and was known for its salads and sandwiches.
But it’s now a two-story, 4,500-square-foot restaurant, and it will be shuttered from June 1, 2020 to April 1, 2021.
The restaurant was scheduled to open in late 2021.
More than 1,000 employees will be laid off, with plans for an additional 1,500 at the plant, according to a statement from the company.
The Olive Garden will be closing because of “increased competition from a new Olive Garden Restaurant opening on site,” the statement said.
The restaurant, with more than 1 million square feet of outdoor space, is located on a 2.7-acre site at 1125 S. Alameda Ave.
in the city’s historic Old Town.
